How much does proofreading cost?
The simple answer is: it depends!
My rates vary, based on how complicated the document is and how much time it will take me to do the work. These two factors are often, but not always, connected. Other factors, such as the subject matter and the level of the writing, will make a difference. This is why I will ask to see a sample of your work before giving a more accurate quote. My rates also vary depending on the level of service you require.
Here are some of the factors that will affect my quote:
My rates are based on the professional rates recommended by the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), of which I am a member. I follow the SfEP's code of practice; you can read my standard terms and conditions here.
The best way to find out how much it will cost is to contact me directly. I'll be happy to discuss your requirements.

Here are some of the factors that will affect my quote:
- Different rates for different services
- my usual proofreading rate is £20 per 1,000 words
- my usual proofreading rate for student (postgraduate) work is c. £11 per 1,000 words (not including formatting)
- my usual copy-editing rate is £25 per 1,000 words
- the rate per 1,000 words is likely to be slightly less for larger projects
- I have a minimum fee of £25, regardless of the length of the project
(If you are not sure of the difference between proofreading and copy-editing, click here for an explanation.)
- Different ways of quoting
- rate per 1,000 words (my usual practice)
- hourly rate, if that is more appropriate for your project
- flat fee – this might suit you better if you are on a particular budget, but may constrain the level of service I can offer
- Special circumstances
- urgent projects or very tight schedules may cost more
- evening and weekend work attracts a premium too
- if your document is simple and not urgent, it may cost less
