How can I help you?

Businesses

annual reports – advertising – marketing materials – newsletters – bulletins – websites – blogs

Communicating your message directly and effectively to your customers, stakeholders and clients plays an important part in building and promoting your brand. And the opposite is true, too: typos, factual errors or inconsistent language can reflect badly on the professionalism of your company.

As a professional proofreader and copy-editor, I can help ensure that your written materials are correct, consistent and well expressed, and that they get your message across in your voice.

Music organisations

concert programmes – brochures – posters – word sheets – CD notes – opera synopses

Music notation and writing about music are specialist areas. If you produce any kind of music-related text or music scores, you could benefit from working with an editorial professional with a music background.

I am a classical music specialist with many years' experience of working in music and concert promotion. If your programme notes need proofreading, why not get in touch?

Writers

authors – academics – self-publishers – content creators

A good proofreader should be able to work on almost any kind of material* with the same level of accuracy and attention to detail. I'm friendly and approachable (but don't take my word for it – have a look at a few testimonials), and above all I'm reliable and professional in my approach.

If you are already working with an editor, you may find it helpful to hire a separate proofreader for an objective, independent check of your manuscript before you finally publish. (In fact, many editors recommend it, even if they offer a proofreading service themselves.)

I am a member of the CIEP, EPANI and AFEPI. If I can't help you myself, I may be able to put you in touch with someone who can.

*I don't work in certain specialist areas, such as medical editing or law.

Education

prospectuses – yearbooks – websites – alumni magazines – public events programmes

The student prospectus is one of your key recruitment tools. But it can be a minefield – and that's just the printed version! All that information has to be replicated consistently and accurately on your website and your other media platforms.

I know that education organisations are working within ever-tighter constraints. Sometimes there just isn't enough time to check every last little detail. I can help take some of the pressure off by proofreading your publications and eliminating the errors that might otherwise slip through.

And whatever deadline we agree, I will meet it.

Publishers

professionally trained  – membership of industry bodies – subject specialism – proofreading on screen or paper

Publishers, quite rightly, have high expectations of freelance proofreaders and copy-editors. You can find details of my professional training to date here, and my experience here, and I am happy to provide references on request and/or to take your in-house editing test before you decide whether to hire me.

If you need a subject specialist in music, I can help you. My experience also includes proofreading books on management and leadership, and magazine articles on outdoor pursuits.

Students

dissertations – theses

You're nearly there: you have worked for a year, perhaps two or even three, to produce a dissertation or thesis that represents the summation of all your studies. It is very hard to stand back and check for every possible mistake in the text – let alone in all those footnotes and references.

I offer an affordable proofreading service for postgraduate students. I will not change your work in any way (it is important that the work you submit is entirely your own), but I will find and correct the spelling and grammatical errors that might compromise your assessment.

I also guarantee confidentiality.

Any questions?

If you have any questions about the services I offer, why not email me, or give me a ring? I'm happy to answer any questions you may have, with no obligation.
If you are not quite ready to hire a professional proofreader yet, you might like to have a look at my Ten top tips for proofreading your own work.

'I met Pam Smith seven weeks before the deadly deadline of a PhD submission. I was demented, driven daft by my own run-on sentences, unruly punctuation, fecked-up formatting and a bewildering bibliography.
Pam was an editor extraordinaire. She tackled my verbosity and made sure every word pulled its weight, every sentence was a unit of sense and every paragraph contained an idea expressed in a syntax to rock the box of an examiner.*
After putting manners on my bibliography, Pam tic-tacked between my in-text references and works cited to double check for inconsistencies. She even pointed out errors in the spellings of French sociologists and Russian culture theorists!
I am delighted to recommend the proof-reading services of Pam Smith. Her craftwomanship and attention to detail helped me finish my final draft and walk into my viva like I owned the room. Pam is a gift.'
Dr Rachael Hegarty, 2017

* Note: Universities have strict rules about the level of editorial help their students are permitted to have. To avoid any doubt, I should confirm that the service I provided to Rachael was proofreading only; the submitted thesis – in all its glory – was entirely her own work!
